Section 6.4 Comparing Two Numerical Variables (N4)
In Section 5.2 we compared two categorical variables to each other. In this section, we compare two numerical variables.
Exploration 6.4.1. Birth Weight and Smoking.
We are interested in seeing whether or not there is any difference in the average birth of weight of babies whose mothers smoked versus those that do not.

Exploration 6.4.2. Differences in Samples.
In Exploration 6.4.1, we saw that there was an observable difference in the average baby weights of the samples. We also saw a wide variety of baby weights and quite a bit of overlap. The question is are the distributions from which the samples come identical or not?
(a)
If two distributions have different means, we'd expect differences in the observed samples. Run the following code to generate histograms for two samples of size 30, one from a normal distribution with mean 10, one from a normal distribution with mean 12, and draw lines indicating their means.

If two distributions have the same mean, we'd still expect differences in the observed samples! Run the following code to generate histograms for two samples of size 30, both from a normal distribution with mean 10 and draw lines indicating their means.
Run it a few times to see different samples.So, if we're given two samples as in Exploration 6.4.1, how are we to tell if this indicates an actual difference in population means? \(p\)-values of course!
Subsection 6.4.1 Differences in Numerical Variables
Activity 6.4.3. Shopping and Spending.
Suppose that customers at department store A spend on average \(\mu_A=\$350\) in a trip with standard deviation \(\sigma_A=\$75\text{.}\) Customers who shopt at department store B spend on average \(\mu_B=\$200\) in a trip with standard deviation \(\sigma_B=\$40\text{.}\)
Consider the random variable \(X\) we get by taking a sample of 50 customers from store A, 30 customers from store B, taking the average spending by the A customers, and from that subtract the average spending from the B customers.
(a)
The average amount spent by 50 A customers is a random variable. Use Theorem 6.1.2 to find the mean \(\mu_{\bar{a}}\) and standard error \(SE_{\bar{a}}\) for this variable.
(b)
The average amount spent by 30 B customers is a random variable. Use Theorem 6.1.2 to find the mean \(\mu_{\bar{b}}\) and standard error \(SE_{\bar{b}}\) for this variable.

Remark 6.4.1. Difference of Means.
Let there be two random numerical variables, with population means \(, \mu_1, \mu_2\) and standard deviations \(\sigma_1. \sigma_2\text{.}\) Then let \(D\) be the random variable generated by taking random samples of size \(n_1, n_2\) of the two variables and taking the difference in their proportions. Then \(D\) is approximated by a normal variable with mean and standard deviation:
When using sample standard deviations \(s_1, s_2\) to estimate \(\sigma_1, \sigma_2\) we use a \(t\)-distribution with degrees of freedom: \(\min(n_1, n_2)-1\text{.}\)
Subsection 6.4.2 Confidence Intervals
Remark 6.4.2.
As in Remark 6.2.1, given samples of two numerical variables, of sizes \(n_1, n_2\) with sample means \(\bar{x}_1, \bar{x}_2\) and standard deviations \(s_1, s_2\text{,}\) we can find a C% confidence interval for the difference of population means \(\mu_1-\mu_2\) by
where \(SE_D=\sqrt{\frac{s_1^2}{n_1}+\frac{s_2^2}{n_2}}\) as in Remark 6.4.1, and \(t^*\) is the \(t\) value so that \(P(-t^*\lt t \lt t^*)=C\%\) for a \(t\)-distribution with \(\min(n_1, n_2)-1\) degrees of freedom.
Note that other techniques to do compute confidence intervals utilize a more complicated method to determine degrees of freedom. We use this method for hand computations as it's straightforward and still a good approximation.
Activity 6.4.4. Stopping Distance.
A automotive manufacturer tests two types of brakes for it's mid-sized SUV's. In a sample of 30 SUV's with type A breaks, the stopping distance when breaks are applied at 60 mph was found to be 127.43 ft with standard deviation 5.24 feet. In a seperate sample of 30 SUV's using type B breaks, the average stopping distance was 120.45 feet with standard deviation 4.37 feet.
We want to find a 95% confidence interval for the difference in stopping distance between the breaks.

Compute the the difference in sample means \(\bar{x}_1-\bar{x}_2\text{.}\)

Activity 6.4.5. Beef Sandwiches.
Our reoccuring restaurateur is back and wants to know what the difference is, if any, in the amount of Roast Beef Sandwiches sold each lunch rush in her East and West locations. She takes a sample of 30 lunch rushes in the East Location and 45 in the West.

Subsection 6.4.3 Hypothesis Testing
Remark 6.4.3.
We can test the difference between means of numerical variables, similar to how we tested difference of proportions in Remark 5.2.6. Given two numerical variables with population means \(\mu_1, \mu_2\) we have alternative Hypothesis in the forms:
\(\displaystyle H_A: \mu_1-\mu_2>\mu_0.\)
\(\displaystyle H_A: \mu_1-\mu_2\lt\mu_0.\)
\(\displaystyle H_A: \mu_1-\mu_2\neq\mu_0.\)
The null hypothesis for these is H_0: \mu_1-\mu_2=\mu_0.
We find \(p\)-values in much the same way as in Remark 6.2.3. We assume the null hypothesis, and let \(D\) be the sampling distribution of the differences of the means of two samples, sizes \(n_1, n_2\text{.}\) Then \(D\) would have mean \(\mu_1-\mu_2\) and standard deviation
as in Remark 6.4.1, and \(t^*\) is the \(t\) value so that \(P(-t^*\lt t \lt t^*)=C\%\) for a \(t\)-distribution with \(\min(n_1, n_2)-1\) degrees of freedom (again a simplified heurisitic).
Then based on the alternative hypothesis, we compute the tail area(s) exactly as we would in Remark 5.2.6.
Activity 6.4.6. Chicken Feed.
Dairy farmers wish to test a new type of diets for dairy cows, with the hope that the new diet will increase milk yields. 20 cows are fed the traiditional diet and 15 the experimental diet. The cows are observed over a 4 week period, and the average daily milk yield and sample standard deviations for both groups are recorded in Liters.
Let \(\mu_1\) denote the true mean of milk production for cows on the standard diet, and \(\mu_2\) denote the true mean of milk production for cows on the experimental diet.
